Arguably the oldest hotel in New York, this property was built in 1822 and once housed Union soldiers during the Civil War. Today it’s a haven for budget travelers, particularly Europeans and Australians. Located in Little Italy, it also straddles Chinatown and SoHo and is steps away from great restaurants and bars. The small lobby has the feel of an international youth hostel. Fortunately, the rooms have been renovated since the 19th century. Still these spacious accommodations are spartan. The tile and linoleum floors don’t add much ambience, but the heavy, wood beds are a nice touch. The cheaper-priced rooms have shared bathrooms. All come with washbasins.
